new year's eve soundtrack

First the announcement that uber-designer Marc Newson will be the creative director for Sydney's New Year's Eve celebrations and now we hear that the accompanying soundtrack will be ALL AUSTRALIAN music, for the first time ever.

It's going to be a 12-minute mix, that will include songs by Pendulum, The Swingers, Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu and INXS and AC/DC...

Curated by the City's NYE11 Musical Directors, multi-ARIA Award winner Josh Abrahams and Davide Carbone, the soundtrack aims to lift the profile of Australian music via the event, which is seen all around the world. Josh and David listened to hundreds of songs to create the final list, which will only be revealed at midnight on New Year's Eve.

"We did go through a vast amount of music,'' Abrahams said. "I don't think either of us realised the scope of great Australian songs out there. Particularly as we dug through the more recent indie material - we uncovered some fantastic gems. We were constantly reminded that Aussie songs easily match anything the rest of the world has to offer."

Carbone said "punctuation, rhythm and emotional synergy" were the most important elements in compiling a soundtrack for fireworks. "It really depends on the moment within the show. Is it a still, breathless, ethereal moment? Or is it a powerful, frantic, explosive moment?"

The complete list of artists and songs will be revealed on the stroke of midnight.

How exciting! I wonder what will be the final song?

The Sydney Midnight Fireworks are seen by an estimated one billion people and are regarded as the "first" in a global countdown [I suppose that's because they conveniently overlook NZ, right?]
