CAFE DOV

Anyone who has lived around the Potts Point, Darlinghurst, East Sydney area will be familiar with cafe DOV a legendary foodie destination from the moment it opened its doors, across the road from the old Darlo Jail House [in those days, the TAFE Fashion Design School headquarters].

Well cafe DOV is all grown up now, having turned 21 this year, changing ownership and location in the interim.......but the magic remains, with a seasonal menu that's bursting with fresh flavours for breakfast, lunch and dinner!

The chefs source the fresh produce from local Sydney region farms and growers, preferring sustainable and organic. Some of the herbs are even grown in the DOV garden, though if you follow DOV on Facebook you will know that there was a problem with some very hungry caterpillars a few weeks ago [no rocket in the salad that week!]

Owner Tim Petersen says that the most popular menu items include the breakfast menu Corn Fritters, and the newly introduced Caesar Salad with Crispy Pork Belly.

"We are famous for our breakfast, and were finalists for Best Breakfast in the 2010 and 2011 Savour Australia Awards. It’s not all about breakfast though, with creative menus for lunch and dinner - and we offer nearly every dish as a small or big plate......"

The newly released range of dov marmalade, tomato relish and ginger+lime syrup suggests "xmas gift idea" and I'm also thinking a gift to yourself to stock up your own larder could be a very good xmas gift idea as well.... the relish is a must for left over ham sandwiches; and the ginger+lime syrup just needs a lychee, some mint and a splash of vodka in a tall glass to impress your guests ....[ now, give it a suitable name and voila! .....you're welcome...].

cafe DOV will be open every day over the holiday period, with the exception of Christmas Day and New Years Day, and could be just the thing if you are tired of cooking or just tired of entertaining.

Alternatively take your whole party there - the restaurant holds deceptively more than it would seem - with seating for 75, it operates on a casual first come, first served basis although they do take bookings for dinner.

Dining at DOV, you have a choice of BYO or a very eclectic wine list....Gourmet Traveller was impressed enough, this year to call it  a  .....“ tight, wonderfully assorted list of mouth-watering wines........” and it's very well priced too....

Tim says they have been described as “a little bit Parisian cafe, a little bit New York bistro + a little bit Sydney restaurant" and they like to think of themselves as "a friendly village eatery....."

And indeed it's just the sort of eatery that every village needs.

Open till 11pm each day, with the exception of Sunday, when they close at 3pm.
