This Saturday, why not celebrate two of life's great pleasures - food + cycling - with a posse of like minded cycling foodies?

The Moving Feast is meeting up at 9.00am at Kings Cross markets and then moving [and feasting] through Darlinghurst, Surry Hills and Redfern, checking in at Sydney Sustainable Markets Taylor Square, Bourke St Bakery and Eveleigh Farmer's Markets along the way, before decamping at Prince Alfred Park for an afternoon of feasting and tunes, with a live set from "indie-folk-heroes" Kodachrome, followed by some soul funk and hip-hop for the afternoon chill-out.

so, if you want to spend Saturday in a guilt free, calorie burning, indulgent foodie paradise, I suggest you brush off the walking shoes, pushbike or skateboard and enjoy some of Sydney's fine spring weather and gourmet delights.

The 'Moving Feast' is an event created in support of  'Moving Planet' a worldwide climate rally, dedicated to moving beyond fossil fuels, that will count 168 countries participating across the globe this Saturday and is arguably the MOST IMPORTANT global movement you can join.

BARRIO CHINO

The operative word for  Barrio Chino, the new neighbourhood mexican bar + eatery is fresh ....

From the fresh, eye-popping colours of the food to the fresh limes in the margaritas; from the fresh, clean  design of the interior to the happy fresh faces of the smiling wait-staff and beautiful people lining the bar area...... Barrio Chino is shiny and new and a breath of fresh air on the mexican food scene.

And the food is sublime.... no greasy, cheesy carb-laden stodge here. Our favourite picks included the Tuna Tostada the Pulled Pork Tostada, the BBQ Corn Cobs with Chipotle Mayo and the Baby Back Ribs....... though $16 for FOUR lonely ribs on a plate was a surprise.... [$4 per rib!]. If you're looking for US/Mexican portion sizing on the ribs, or anything else, think again.

The margaritas did however, seem like a bargain (go figure) The tequila selection is extensive and top notch and, with the right gang for company, this bar is definitely the kind of place you could get comfortable in.

On our night, we bypassed the bar and chose a booth towards the back of the room, which was just as well, as Barrio Chino fills up fast. And as we were to discover, there were quite a few 'friday night revelers'....

On the Sydney scene's BARometer right now, this joint is hot! 

As the place filled to the brim with even more beautiful people we munched on desert -  churros and a side order of dulce de leche (caramel) and chocolate dipping sauce  - which was a bit underwhelming, and next time I would much prefer a walk down the block to Cafe Hernanadez for the real deal.

By the time we left, the booths were full and the communal table was groaning, the bar was three deep and the whole landscape was becoming more "bar" and less "eatery" by the minute. There was a palpable festive atmosphere.

Barrio Chino's food is authentic Mexican fare served in a designer cantina. It's quirky and fun and most definitely fresh!

I would go back again  .... though next time perhaps take my drinking sombrero and a party attitude.

Alan Ball at the Opera House

Academy and Emmy Award-winning writer/producer/director/playwright Alan Ball bares all this week in a promisingly scintillating chat with fan/tv host/comic Wil Anderson, at The Sydney Opera House.

Describing himself as "equal parts brutally cynical and achingly romantic" Ball could also add "wildly successful and uncompromisingly intelligent" to that list.


One of his first screenplays, American Beauty, picked up five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.

Next came Six Feet Under, a show about a family of funeral directors [not as dour as it sounds], which earned two Golden Globes and six Emmys.

Recently, Ball has created the sexy cult phenomenon True Blood and managed the seemingly impossible feat of retaining the true Sookie Stackhouse devotees whilst attracting scores of new fans.

I wasn't too sure about the song at first, but loving the clip. then, the song just gets under your skin [pun intended!] album is out in 3 weeks time [August 19]. he plays the Opera House August 20/21 before embarking on a capital city tour.  there's a buzz around this one. go here for more info

The Italian Job

How fabulous does this sound? A night of ITALIAN cinema, beer and food - all served up at MEZZALUNA RISTORANTE, a hidden gem in Victoria St, Potts Point, with one of the most stunning views of the Sydney city skyline.

That's what I call "La Dolce Vita" bella and it's starting tonight!

Cinema Peroni at Mezzaluna Ristorante Italiano is coming to town courtesy of Peroni Nastro Azzurro and will be bringing some serious Italian style to Sydney, starting tonight and playing for 6 weeks up to the end of August.

"Cinema Peroni will take you on a journey through modern Italy showcasing some of the best contemporary Italian films. Moviegoers will sample fresh Aperitivo, combining small plate food, accompanied by Peroni Nastro Azzuro and Peroni Leggera, as a prelude to dinner. Dinner will naturally be Italian fare, featuring pasta, succulent meats and spectacular desserts."
