Elizabeth Bay - the book

If you have ever lived in Elizabeth Bay, you have undoubtedly been seduced by the area and though there is only a handful of streets in this most densely populated neighbourhood, there's history in it's bones and something creative and new and exciting happening around every corner.

Inevitable then that someone would publish a book on the area ... not just any old book but a beautifully produced limited-edition book, featuring paintings of everyday scenes of Elizabeth Bay, by Sydney artist Dean O'Brien.

O'Brien has "penned a love letter to the streets and architecture of the Bay"and the 100 signed limited-edition copies are pretty enough to make any lover swoon.

This neighbourhood changes almost daily, with developers constantly building and rebuilding, trying to maximise the tiny strips of land. but some features are still there, if you know where to look.... like the hidden grottos, now tucked away, that were original features of the Elizabeth Bay House gardens; or the tiny park that was the mansion's front lawn and is now nestled under the gaze of the surrounding apartment buildings, still looking out across the water to Clarke Island and further, to the entrance of Sydney Harbour.

O'Brien has found them and prettied them up.... beautiful and comfortingly familiar to fans of "lizzy bay"

O'Brien's original paintings - oils on canvas are also available to buy. get along to Becker Minty, Potts Point and grab one quick ....would make a nice xmas present for someone special.

whether you settle for the book or a painting it's pretty and exquisite and exclusive ... just like Elizabeth Bay herself.

[Becker Minty is tucked away in Manning Street right behind TOBY'S].

the archibald

This Friday, April 15, sees the announcement of the winner of Australia's prestigious Archibald Prize at The Art Gallery of NSW.

Here's a sneak preview of some of the finalists, but you really need to head over to the Gallery to appreciate them in all their colourful, vibrant glory... and then you can be opinionated informed as the debate rages over the "people's prize"which is announced on 16 June.....

The Archibald Prize is one of Australia's oldest and most prestigious art awards. JF Archibald’s primary aims were to foster portraiture, support artists and perpetuate the memory of great Australians. Since its inception in 1921 the prize has been awarded to some of Australia’s most important artists, including George Lambert, William Dobell and Brett Whiteley.......

Really could think of no better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than a stroll through the Domain, a squizz at the Archibald and a sundowner at one of those fine establishments over at Woolloomooloo's Finger Wharf.
